Renfro Valley, Pumpkins, KFC & Moonbow

On Saturday, October 23, we met Grammy and Pop-A-Lops along with Uncle Dan, Aunt Dorothy, Heidi and Holden for an afternoon and evening of fun starting in Renfro Valley. Pop-A-Lops said his family listened to music broadcasts from Renfro Valley when he was growing up so he was curious about the area. While we didn't end up visiting the "Big Red Barn" or the Fiddler's Festival that was occurring that weekend we had a great time in the BitterSweet Village. It is a little village of old pioneer buildings that have been moved to Renfro Valley from across the state of Kentucky. It was really neat and the girls really enjoyed it. It made me think it might be time to think about heading to Williamsburg as part of a trip to DC! :)

The best picture of our family of 5
Another family picture including Grammy, Pop-A-Lops and Heidi
Reagan thought it was really funny seeing Daddy in the stocks but had no interest in trying it out on her own
I thought this was so sweet of the three little girls checking out the "cobbler's bench"
A creative attempt at 3 playing checkers...
Kennedy loved having Grammy take pictures of the two of them and then looking at the picture :)
Reagan and Holden enjoying a video with Grammy
Holden done with the video and moving right along! :)
Pop-A-Lops showed the girls how to ring the bell
I love this picture of Pop-A-Lops and his girls checking out a grasshopper
After Renfro Valley we headed to Corbin, Kentucky to enjoy the first KFC. We got completely lost in Corbin (amazing given the size of the town, I know) but found a farmer's market with some great pumpkins. We purchased a couple (a more reasonable size than pictured below) as well as some apples and other fresh goodies. We also saw the Uncle Barry's family business across the street from the farmer's market and wished we'd had more time to stop in and check it out!

The cutest little pumpkin in the patch!
The girls sharing and enjoying the snacks they purchased at the farmers market - so sweet!
After much searching (including me running into a tatoo parlor and Uncle Dan and Aunt Dorothy stopping at a Hardee's to ask directions) we finally discovered the original KFC!
There is a neat little museum incorporated into the restaraunt that you can visit to learn how KFC all began
Kennedy loved her chicken!
Pop-A-Lops declared the chicken "finger lickn' good" and Kennedy definitely agreed! She may have eaten more chicken than anyone else that evening! lol :)
After our KFC dinner we headed to Cumberland State Park to try and see the Moonbow. There are only a couple of places in the world this occurs and the only place in the Western Hemisphere. It is a rainbow that occurs by a waterfall during the full moon on a clear night.

I somehow missed posting a picture of Tim pushing all three girls in the stroller (boy was that Sit 'N Stand a wonderful invention) but here is a picture of some of our crew waiting for the Moonbow to appear.
Pop-A-Lops setting up and waiting for the Moonbow
Because it was getting late and it was cloudy, so we weren't sure that the Moonbow would appear, we decided to head out about 9:00. Daddy was super sweet and somehow managed to carry both his tired girls up the steep, twisting and pitch black trail. What a super hero!
As it turned out, the Moonbow began appearing about a half an hour after we left. Grammy and Pop-A-Lops stayed to try and see it and take pictures and here is the best they got. So amazing and cool! We're definitely going to have to go back and see it for ourselves sometime!
Thanks for the super fun outing suggestion Grammy and Pop-A-Lops! What a great last minute excursion! :)
